Despite the islands turbulent history, with many different masters over the centuries, the natives have retained their unique character and remain resourceful. Their friendship and hospitality to strangers wins many friends and they will embrace you in enjoying the Greek culture, cuisine and traditions.
Kefalonia has had a chequered history. In 1082, the Norman Baron Guiscard tried to seize the island without success. Venetian pirates took up the endeavours of the Normans until the island finally fell into the possession of the Orsinis in 1185. It was decimated by the Turks in 1483 and then recaptured by the Venetians in 1500 and occupied by them for nearly 300 years. At that stage in history, the French took over the island, under Napoleon, and were succeeded by a brief Russian and a Turkish occupation. The British prevailed in 1809, but their rule came to an end in 1864 and the island re-united with Greece.
Thankfully, things have calmed down!!!!! Kefalonia is now visited by tourists and many of the world’s best-known celebrities.
